Only that much wood may be cut per year as the forest can reproduce
in the same period of time.The forest may and can be harvested, but
this has to be done sustainably.
But all over the world more wood is used: Forests are cut to produce
paper and beams to build houses; trees are cut to get wood for burning;
and even thousands of hectares of forest every day are cleared for agricultural
land.
And there is the Waldsterben, the death of trees because they cannot
live with the poisenous air, the dust and the salty rains. The continual warming
of the earth's atmosphere is happening too fast for the forsts to adapt. The
consequence - the forest eco-system gets weak and the trees die.
In ancient times the forests were considered sacred.
To-day we have lost the sense of the dignity of trees.
It is the youth who have to care for the forests of the future. Trees
grow slowly - they need 25 to 100 years before they can be
harvested.
